Paul Akmajian grew up in Tucson, AZ, at a time when undeveloped plots of desert land were still interspersed with city blocks. While exploring “empty lots” or taking hikes trails in the nearby mountains and Sonoran Desert, he developed a deep connection to the land, the plants, the animals, and sky of the desert Southwest. After attending the University of Arizona, he was accepted into the master’s program in painting and drawing at UNM. Paul has lived in Albuquerque ever since – most of that time in the north valley. The inspiration for his work continues to be the beauty of the desert Southwest, both New Mexico and Arizona – especially the light, landforms, clouds, sky and water. Paul spent his working years as a graphic designer at both UNM and the University of Arizona, and between career and family didn’t have much time to paint. The time of social distancing during the pandemic (and subsequent retirement) prompted him to set up his studio after a long hiatus and paint again daily. Recently exhibiting again, Paul has participated in the 2024, 2025, (and upcoming) 2026, North Valley Studio Tour. He is also a member of Plein Air Painters of New Mexico and goes out almost weekly to paint with PALs (Plein Air Landscapers).
