In my abstract stone carving, I work to bring together the natural and the personal. My goal is to place strong organic forms and solid rock in direct juxtaposition. The contrast between the natural and the man-made, the rough and the smooth, the new and the old are what give emotional content to my work. I start carving by eliminating any of the weak or rough parts of the stone that might cleave off later. When only the strong, beautiful stone is left, I begin my “conversation” with the stone. The interplay of shapes – and sometimes found iconic objects - leads me to ideas about form, composition, and meaning. I earned my Master of Architecture degree in 1980 from the University of New Mexico. In 1997, I began my journey in stone carving. During the last 29 years, I have had the good fortune to have been taught by some the most generous and skilled sculptors from the region and the world. Mark’s sculptures have appeared in galleries in Santa Fe, Taos, Jemez Springs, Madrid (NM), and Albuquerque, New Mexico. In February 2025, one of Mark’s larger sculptures was selected to be part of the Bernalillo County Public Art Permanent Collection. Mark is currently showing work at the Gallery Hozho at Hotel Chaco in Albuquerque, N.M. and the Galerie111 in Taos, N.M.
